A Minimus Rack–Tubus Fly

This rack is smaller that other racks I have viewed. Thanks to Ian (fards) Fardoe of BROL for posting his recommenda -tion in Don’s (Doncl) “700 almost here” Thread. I also considered the Old Man Mountain White Rock Rack. I believe I can attach the Topeak fender (below) to this rack and in-turn the rack to the frame beneath the neckrest. We shall see…

A Different Rear Fender–Topeak DeFender M2

I intend to find a way to use this fender rather than the Planet Bike Fender. This fender should give me the effect I want to achieve, cost less than the PBF, attaches at one point on the bike, and is easily removed.

The above graphic contains my Catrike 700 shopping list to make the bike safe and unique, as set up by me. I’ll use many components that I have to complete my setup.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

The first decision to be made was weather to go purchase the Silvio Cruzbike frameset–a FWD-Recumbent, where I’d have to add components and wheels, or the purchase a Tadpole Recumbent–trike, and ride with many BROIL friends. The decision was easy. There are many more trike riders than Cruzbike riders, and few of those are Silvio riders. Maybe one day…

The next decision was which trike to buy. Another fairly easy decision. I want to ride the fastest trike I can buy. The Catrike 700 meets that need. My options are all in the Catrike family–the 700, the Expedition, and the Speed. I read all I could find and based on expected riding locations, the 700 is the bike for me. I will purchase from Dana of Bent Up Cycles, as I have for my other 2 ‘bents. Dana has always been helpful in selecting and setting up my ‘bents.

The next two decisions were much more difficult. One, when to buy–now or delay the purchase for 6 to 8 weeks. I’ve decided to wait for a while. In the interim, I thought about how I want to have the trike setup. This has been the most difficult decision.

I want to bike to be fast, yet I want it to be different. The mental debate has been over using a Schlumpf Drive, my preference being their High Speed Drive, alone, or in combination with a Rohloff Speedhub. I consulted several knowledgeable BROL members, including Bryan Ball, the BROL editor. First, the Rohloff will not fit the 700 [135mm versus 130mm dropout width]. So, that means either the Expedition or Speed. The consensus (if I were to go with the Speedhub) is the Expedition. It has 20″ versus 16″ front wheels. I’d ride higher above the ground–less aero. The bottom line is that I will not likely be satisfied with the loss of efficiency [spell that speed] using either, or both of these devices. For now, I have accepted the wisdom of others. This is most likely the end of it. I can always use this combination on the RANS Stratus XP. That will bombproof my touring. I have a few other mods that should give me a unique trike. Setup is fun!
