Discovery Launch Postponed

NASA Defers Setting Next Shuttle Launch Date

During a thorough review of space shuttle Discovery’s readiness for flight, NASA managers decided Friday more data and possible testing are required before proceeding to launch. Engineering teams have been working to identify what caused damage to a flow control valve on shuttle Endeavour during its November 2008 flight.

“We need to complete more work to have a better understanding before flying,” said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Gerstenmaier chaired Friday’s Flight Readiness Review.

“We were not driven by schedule pressure and did the right thing. When we fly, we want to do so with full confidence.”

The shuttle has three flow control valves that channel gaseous hydrogen from the main engines to the external fuel tank. Teams also have tried to determine the consequences if a valve piece were to break off and strike part of the shuttle and external fuel tank.

The Space Shuttle Program has been asked to develop a plan to inspect additional valves similar to those installed on Discovery. This plan will be reviewed during a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Afterward, the setting of a new target launch date may be considered.

This is the closest I have come to seeing a shuttle launch. I’d rather watch the launch on TV, and have the crew safe, than possibly an unsafe launch while I’m in the Orlando area. Wednesday, 02/25, we may learn the new launch date.

The Catrike Rally will begin at 9:00am Saturday in front of the Edgewater Hotel. This year the ride on the West Orange Trail will start in Winter Garden and go to the East toward the Buddhist Temple and loop down to Lake Apopka before returning to the Winter Garden. (There will be support at the Killarney Station). This year the routes will be marked and maps provided. After the ride, there will be free time for lunch in Winter Garden. There are plenty of restaurants in the area along the trail so you will not need to drive your car.

Plenty of parking in the downtown Winter Garden area; there is a public parking lot on the west end of Plant Street next to the New City Hall building.

Mark and Linda Power from Power On Cycling will be here with Catrikes, cool accessories, apparel and all their great knowledge.

At 2:30 pm we will have the Big Cat Factory Tour so you can see how Catrikes are made. We have implemented a ton of changes in the Factory and also won the Manufacturer of the year for under 100 employees from the Manufacturers Association of Central Florida. So those of you who have been here in the past will have more to see and learn. This is the only time we allow visitors to the factory so make sure you have plans to attend.  We encourage all Rally riders to ride to the Factory Tour because parking is limited and Sherri, our famous and incredibly talented welder, loves to see all of her handy work.

Regis Hampton of Hamptons Edge, Trailside Bikes will host a ride from his new shop in Floral City. It is about a 1 hour 20 minute drive from Winter Garden. It will be a 15-20 mile ride (round trip) to a restaurant for lunch and then return to the shop or ride more of the Withlacoochee Trail.

Please let us know if you plan on attending Regis ride also so he can make reservations for lunch.

If you are not planning on riding with us on Sunday, you can stay in Winter Garden and ride more of the West Orange trail you did not see on Saturday or just enjoy the area.
