Picked up my Campangnolo wheel Reply

Received a call Saturday, 12/14 that my Campy wheel [in to my LBS for bearing replacement] is ready for pickup. I did not pick it up until Tuesday, 12/16. In discussion with my wrench on the 700c tire to use in a trailer capacity, he recommends a 25mm versus 23mm for the trike and trailer–more comfortable ride and  lower rolling resistance acheived with a lower tire pressure [as my wrench a says of Sheldon Brown].  At this point, I willing to try a 25c tire to see how it compares with a 23c. I expect I enjoy a less jarring ride on the trike. Given that my Schwalbe Stelvio order needs to be [11646950 25-622 700x25c RaceGuard Black-Skin Dual].

Velocity Rim Plugs–Front Wheel Reply

Well, I think I may have luckily dodged flatting. On removing the tire & tube, I saw similar depression of the Velocity Plugs. If the tube had undue force on one of the uncovered spoke openings, I’m sure I would have flatted. Again, I’m not faulting the plug, but me for using the plug in a slightly larger opening than intended.

At this point, I van ride without internal flatting or blowout. Now just look out for external punctures.

Velocity Rim Plugs 1

Sometime back I purchased and installed Velocity Rim Plugs like those to the left in wheels on 3 of my bikes. On my Trek Project One, the spoke hole was just a bit larger than the plug. I used a dab of glue to ensure the plug remained in place. Over time, they seemed to shift a bit, exposing a portion of the spoke hole. I imagine the shift occurred as a result of centrifugal force because of the shift pattern of ever other plug being either left or right of the wheel center. Recently, I’ve flatted and find no apparent reason other than an internal puncture base on force against the tube. I’m riding at better than 140 PSI in a tire capable of 160 PSI. I think the flats were caused by the rim, thus its time to reinstall my rim tape.

I think the plugs are OK, just ensure you have a tight fit; otherwise, continue to use your rim tape.

The HED Front Wheel Has Arrived Reply

The wheel is here. The dish is good. I have to adjust the brakes out. This wheel is about 30 grams heavier. I attribute that to more spokes–28 versus 20 in the original wheel. Of course, the hub and rim weigh different than the original. The new wheel is more aero and rolls better, given the ceramic bearings.

Perhaps I’ll get to ride today to check it out. It’s currently 103 degrees,–so maybe later, although I’m to attend church at 7:30 p.m. and ride my DF at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning–now 7:00 a.m.–now cancelled.
