Fargo ~ Mods & Tweaks ~ Hydration 2

CRW_1305.CRW Very minor weight savings here. I began the tour with the Sip-Stream Hydration System in my Arkel Catrike Bags [one of which now has my solar setup]. Using the system within the bags presented 2 problems—albeit not a stopper: 1) I would only get 2/3 of the liquid out at the angle the bottle rested in the bags; and, 2) I get some spillage in the bag as I placed refilled bottles in the bags. The minor weight savings is the removal of the PVC tubing that I used to stabilize the system. Of course, I discarded those early on in the tour. I was discarding ounces. It seemed to not matter.

Outside mounting [I should have used my clean bottles] Now, the Sip-Stream Hydration System is mounted on the quad’s wheel stays. First, I must say, I distain white plastic bottles on cycles. It is just a “me” thing. But, I need the bottles as vertical as possible and prefer to have them on the quad, even when the cage is not attached. This setup facilitates that. I just have to ride to see how well they empty and to determine if there are other issues. Once the cage and rear-quarter panel is in place the “white plastic bottles” should be masked my the panels. Then the question will be ease of access in placing a refilled bottle into the Sip-Stream Cage. We shall see…

Ordered this water bottle 5

I hope the bottle works better than my previous order. That bottle was too large for my cage and was not a good color match. It is more difficult to discern those type problems what you are buying online. This is a Sigg Sport Water Bottle and should fit the bottle cage. Looking at the picture, I think the red will match okay.

Anyway, I like the blend of red & black, with shades of gray. So what, if soccer is depicted. I’m having it shipped by USPS [priority mail ~ that means 2nd-day delivery], the cheapest of the 3 options available. I may see it by the weekend or early next week. Stay tuned for the photographs. I hope to have the Brooks Grips by then.

Sports drink bottles on a Catrike 1

I‘ll use 2 Minoura Single Water Bottle Cage Holders [QB-90], with quick release to hold cages for sports drinks for longer rides. I will mount them as Bluecoyote has mounted his. The QB-90 can be easily removed when not in use. I have also carried a water bottle in the bag mounted on my bottom tube.

Of course, my mounts and cages are all black. These items will arrive Friday, 04/04.

What is this trike’s riding weight 2

The scale shows 51.98 lbs. less the strap weight .46 lbs, equals 51.52 lbs. The riding weight includes a filled 3-liter bladder, spare tubes, batteries, lights, etc. I have wedge bags to add and likely a sports drink bladder. I estimate a riding weight of 50 to 55 lbs. This is 5 to 10 lbs less than my RANS Stratus XP.The collage above show the straps I use to suspend the trike. Upper left–rear lift strap wraps around the frame, just in front of the rear tire [see lower center photograph]; Upper right–front lift strap wraps around the frame, just in front of the cruciform.

Storage: Reply

In addition to being used as a trike work stand [to be validated] and VK2 work stand [validated], the stand is useful for prototyping items to be installed on the Catrike 700.

Of course, the 2 panniers provide additional storage space. I have a Fastback Systems 4.0 Hydration Pack [3-liter] and I’m adding another NorBack Frame Pack, which I will place on the frame, just in front of the rear wheel. I have one in a similar position on my VK2. I’ll use it for to store spare tubes and tire repair related items.

Panniers Stiffened with Corflute 2

Well, I think the Radical Design Small Panniers are practical for a low-racer; however,, I think they are more practical and look better having shape as opposed to just hanging as shown in my initial photos below.

So, here are a few photographs with the pannier walls stiffened using Corflute [vinyl corrugated sign material].

I‘ve used the better part of 2 days in completing this project. With the pannier walls in place: I have a nice tunnel for the rear-facing camera [if I choose to shoot video with the panniers on]; I do not have to worry about my taillight being masked my the left pannier; the chain will not make contact with the right pannier; the panniers will not make contact with the rear stays. I fashioned a stand-off for the right pannier that supports its weight. I contact the right stay with a rubber suction cup. I can protect my paint at that point using protective tape. I’ll test ride soon and adjust as needed.
