Day2 ~ FRF Tour Reply

Rollout [~3:00 a.m.] from the Rocky Mount Best Western Motel enroute the Artis residence in Richmond, Virginia. I expect some rain during today’s ride. The Jarratt & Richmond forecasts are the two that concern me. Today’s winds are to be out of the SSW–that should equal a tail wind. Let’s see if the fairing matters. Yesterday’s ride was about equal to last May’s ride.

See you in Richmond…

Enroute to Richmond, I just had to take this picture.

Because, I took this on my May double-century ride [218 miles in 1 day] to Richmond.

Well, 113 dry miles later I am here. It did not rain. The sky was clear. The temperature was hot–its relative. The journey was uneventful. Again, I am blessed. Now I just have to do the reverse of the 2 day journey to Richmond. I’m really looking forward to 2 more centuries–SURE!

The data is at Motion Based Web Site.

The ride was slower than I wanted. Moving time–10 hrs 40 minutes for 113.21 miles. Again, the bike is loaded for touring, I did manage to see a max speed of 38.5 mph. I did not start seeing winds until around 10:00 a.m. There were times I sensed a speed boost from the winds–I guess blowing into the fairing. I just wish the winds had been stronger. I did ride into some head winds. I perceive the fairing pierced them more easily than the bike with no fairing.

Given the additional 13 miles, I’ll probably depart at 2:00 a.m. Monday morning versus 3:00 a.m.

2:55 a.m. — Preparing to roll out from Fayetteville, enroute to Rocky Mount, NC.

The ride began at 3:08 a.m. [had to wait for satellites to be acquired] and ended at 12:57 p.m., with 44 minutes of stops. The bladder must be relieved. Cold weather just makes the need to stop more frequent. Anyway, I got to my hotel [the one I stayed at in May as I returned to Fayetteville form Richmond] before they had a room ready. I waited about an hour before I got into my room. It is all good.

Check Motion Based for details on this ride. The route is Highway 301 North through Petersburg, Virginia.

The bike performed well. I have a few minor adjustments [raise seat back; move left chopper bar a bit further out; try lowering the chopper bar] to make. Again, I’ll test ride before rolling out. I intend to depart as originally planned [3:00 a.m.].

I did have a problem with the fairing fogging up [apparently from my breath]. If only I could redirect air to the inside of the fairing. I ask Karl. I should have had a towel with me. I used my gloves to clear the fairing. For the most part, I just sat up to see over the fairing.

After about 9:00 a.m., today was very warm. Tomorrow’s temperatures are expected to be about the same. Once I’m into Virgina, there is a 40% chance of rain beginning around 10:00 a.m. I can not reach my destination that early, less I depart before 3:00 a.m. I do not think I want to do that. We will see…

Turned the handlebars in somewhat to get my hands behind the fairing. This will help in wind and rain protection, as well as allow the use of a body sock, should one be in my future. This adjustment is made based on an observation form Karl. I also placed my shorter CycleStar Mirrors on the handlebar so that they are behind the fairing. In test riding, I had to readjust the handlebars to preclude knee strike. Riding seems OK. A longer ride will answer for sure.
