This is an in-progress report. Yesterday, I shared the genesis of rain harvesting—thanks Zeke and Michele. Today, you see my approach versus rain barrel stuck under drain pipes. My first criteria is that “farming” must be aesthetically pleasing. Certainly, that is from my perspective as homeowner. I receive positive comments on the way I’ve done the coop [Cedar Towers], the vegetable bins, the compost stations, and now, my waterworks. It has been fun building sound, functional pieces. Okay, this is the cabinet that holds three 275-Gallon Intermediate Bulk Containers [ICB] Totes. First, it must support More…

This time last year, I had not yet begun the building of my 7 raised vegetable bins. Through the spring I completed them, but deferred planting to make good soil and install a drip irrigation system. Well time has passed. I got chickens in May 2011 to make compost [and to date over 500 eggs as a bonus]. I’ve put “dirt” [that is for Michele] in the boxes and amended the soil with my homemade compost. The soil is protected from heavy rains as we await growing season. I will install the drip irrigation system More…

I almost beat the rain—had a computer service call [customer came here] that delayed me somewhat. Seven bins or grow beds as Zeke calls them are now in place. Note, these 2 have a deeper soil containment area than the other 5. Next step is to put in flooring, put polyurethane [at the recommendation of my carpenter] on the outside, put in the liner, and then soil. Thereafter, the drip irrigation system. I am happy to have this part of the project complete. Thanks to my many friends for their ideas and suggestions. –jim

Inspired by Zeke and my neighbor across the street, as well as my books on attracting birds, I have an aviary of sorts in the backyard. There is a fountain, with the peaceful sound of flowing water, a bird feeding station, and so forth. I think the yard has always had birds, but I am paying more attention. I’ve been intrigued by the call of the Cardinal [the North Carolina state bird]. I set up to get a beautiful capture. The bird I want, with the lighting I want, left the perch I want to More…

Now 5 days away [from the Artis Super Bowl Party] and 1/2 cord of wood has been delivered. I think we can roast all the marshmallows & hotdogs we want and stay warm to boot. Having a fire pit is a nice addition to the yard. We have enjoyed it immensely. Now, to see how long this load of wood last. I think I need to paint my 2×4 base black. I’ve been looking at it. It seems to look worst in pictures. Oh well… Thanks again to my friend Zeke for the inspiration.

Yesterday, you saw the logo I selected for this blog, my cards, and so forth. I am very pleased with it. Zeke says, and I agree: I like it! Clear and sharp and I like the inclusiveness of the circles. She did well again! Text has been added, and with a few adjustments, we have the Andie Styner logo you see to the right. It will live at the top of my sidebar.
