Bryan Ball’s Christmas Wish List ~ 2009
Bryan, ‘Bentrider Managing Editor, has published his 2009 Christmas Wish List. It just happens that two of the cycles I considered, the RANS Trizard [#1 on his list] and the Utah Trikes Quad [#3 on his list] are both cycles that Mr. Ball would be content to receive. Have a Merry Christmas Bryan!
For me, for the purpose intended, I think the UTC Quad will best meet my needs.
Which Delta for You?
The RANS Trizard
The Hase Kettwiesel Tour
Let’s say you would use a Rohloff Hub and a Schlumph Mountain Drive on either. Which one for you? This would be for a self-supported tour of near 3,000 miles. Thanks!
RANS Trizard – Another Look
I’m getting lots of Trizard hits [352 since 05/09] and decided to add Larry’s article to my blog.
BROL’s Larry Varney gives the RANS Trizard [a delta trike] another look. “Another” because Bryan Ball, BROL’s Managing Editor also reviewed the Trizard [referenced here].
Larry says:
If you have the urge to try a trike, and you want to check out something a bit different from the tadpoles that all your friends have, take a look at a delta. There are some good ones out there, and none will offer you better performance than the Trizard from RANS. And, they’ve made the decision a bit easier now, with a component and color choice that allows you to choose between a $1995 version and a $2995 one, rather than a single $2600 model.
As usual, Larry Varney gives us an informative and interesting read. Thanks Larry!

Trizard Tandem [sweet!]
BROL Trizard Review
The long-awaited Bryan Ball review of the RANS Trizard Delta Trike is up:
…Speaking of performance… Yes… The Trizard is fast. It is hands down the fastest delta trike I’ve ever ridden and is honestly right up there with some of the quicker tadpoles. It’s not quite as fast as the Catrike 700 I usually ride but it was much closer than I thought it would be. With a weight of 39 pounds, climbing is where it seemed to lose the most ground. The frame is long and the most crucial part is just a monotube but the pedal box is stiff and it felt pretty efficient…
Delta Trikes, and more…
This page courtesy of Michael Deegan who created and maintains the Recumbent Trikes Website. It is a survey of 3-wheelers from around the world, Mike has been kind to allow me to embed page3 [Delta trikes] of his collection in my blog. Thank you Michael.
Earlier, I posted 3 popular delta trikes based on comments on BROL. Of course, there are more and thanks to Mike and his collection, you see them here. In addition to the deltas, Mike also list tadpole trikes [pages 1&2]; tandems [page4]; velomobiles [page5]; homebuilt trikes [page6]; trikes out of production [page7]; and, hand trikes [page8].

Delta [Trike] ~ Trizard
The new “boy” on the block seems to be popular and I know the owner of this Trizard, my BROL friend “The Hipster” [Gregory McLean from NE Dakota Territory]. Needless to say, I also have an interest in this trike. I wonder who will chain them together to make a tandem?

My post on Delta Trikes has garnered some interest. It is now #10 on the list of all-time viewed list of posts. I’m not sure what the viewer interest is; but, I’ll have more on delta trikes.
Bryan Ball, ‘Bentrider Managing Editor, will soon publish his review of the Trizard. Bryan says:
RANS Trizard First Impression
I stopped by The Bicycle Man this afternoon and got a quick spin on the new RANS Trizard delta trike. To say I was impressed is an understatement. The Trizard has love it or hate it looks and some aspects of it are a bit odd but the ride is fantastic. The handling and comfort were great and seems to be a pretty fast mover. RANS had worked out most of the bugs from the Interbike prototype but there were still one or two minor ones to address. One of the chain idlers was pretty noisy in one or two gears for example. The thing I was most impressed with was the use of pretty standard bike parts. The Trizard uses standard bike hubs on all three wheels. I sent an inquiry in on fenders, pannier racks and what not… Full review coming next week but so far I really like this delta/tadpole crossover.
Randy Schlitter, founder of RANS Bikes, also has a good Into the Ride Article on the Trizard as well as background on its development.
BROL Threads:
Delta Trikes
Not mine–I have a tadpole [a Catrike 700 known as Silk]. So, what the difference between a delta and a tadpole? A delta trike or tricycle has one wheel in front and two behind, where a tadpole trike has the reverse.
Here is the new guy on the block: The RANS Trizard. Read Randy Schlitter’s Into the Ride Article #73 for information on this interesting trike. So you ask, are there other delta trikes available? Yes!
My Facebook friends and BROL members Jennifer Lang & Bobby Baxmeyer [her fiancé] [cellolang & bbax] and Mary [TrikeDiva] have Kettwiesel Trikes. I also rode with Parky (a Kett owner) in the Face of America ’08 Ride.
Then there is the Greenspeed Anura, introduced in 2007. I do not know an Anura rider. Both the Kett and Anura offer a differential option. The Trizard does not. The Trizard uses the left wheel as a drive wheel.
There are other delta trikes [see this BROL Interbike '07 article]. These three are frequently discussed on BROL.
This post is to introduce the RANS Trizard and generally comment on two other popular delta trikes. Deltas are but one of many recumbent cycles. Ride what works for you. You see that I ride road bikes [DFs] as well as recumbents [an LWB, an SWB, and a tadpole trike] and a MTB. I hope to add a Crank Forward later this year. It fits between a ‘bent and a DF [also known as an upright].
Here is the BROL Thread started by Nanda [BROL Member Stradavarius] that informs BROL readers of Randy Schlitter’s [RANS Founder] Into the Ride Article #73 on the Trizard.
