The Epilogue we have been waiting for…

leave a comment »

Don Saito has published his summary of his cycling adventure around the 48 contiguous states of the USA. It is a very powerful read and certainly worth our time.

Don says:

Don Saito Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and an accomplishment I can be proud of, as it was something I actually did, myself. But, it was a LOT of work, discomfort, and pain – sometimes straining my physical self to the point of crying out with the effort (Yarghh!) Before beginning, I knew conceptually that, yes, it would be hard, that there would be times when I would be physically miserable, that I could be maimed for life, or even killed. But to see the wonders of this country that I have always wondered about, to have the adventure of a lifetime, and to see for myself, what I might be able to accomplish – those were the rewards which enabled me to start and to keep going – that, plus the promise of the industrial grade bragging rights. I learned a few important concepts while on my journey – nothing really new that I didn’t already know conceptually, but were made much more real and useable to me:

Thanks Don for all that you have shared with us. You do indeed have industrial grade bragging rights.  Cheerios! (crunch, crunch)

Don Hi Mike, Jim, and Mark: Thank you, all! The final entries are coming soon – hopefully today (Sat, Nov 21). It’s been one hell of a ride, and/but I’m sad/glad it’s over. Let me know if you have any questions (and that goes to everyone), and I’ll respond. With answers, even! ;~Don

CONGRATULATIONS to Don Saito

with one comment

I should get back to the starting point (the base of the South Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge) sometime around 1pm – 3pm, tomorrow, Saturday, November 14.

Albeit, belated! CONGRATS Don. I checked his blog constantly, but did not get his Friday the 13th post until today. I feel like I missed the parade, but this is Don’s. I hope some one or more of you got to cheer him on on Saturday afternoon. What an amazing journey.

See the linked post above and the comments. Don says he will post the final daily blogs. He also says:  "Thanks for following along! It’s been an incredible experience – an experience of a lifetime, and it was nice to have company along the way."

TerraCycle Announces its Cargo Monster

I wonder how Mr. Giraldo or Don Saito would have faired with such a setup? I’ve long considered a Surly Big Dummy or the new RANS Hammertruck. Now, thanks to TerraCycle, we have a 3-wheel option, with more to come for recumbent riders. If I were about to tour again, I’d seriously consider a Cargo Monster. The question is which trike [Terry]? The best to Pat Franz and TerraCycle with this new product.

    Don Saito ~ Days 210-230

    leave a comment »

Although Don has not posted new articles, he has posted comments and has written many articles [listed below, with links]. Don says:

Just as I had feared, the weather for the foreseeable future (a week) was going to be some degree of rainy. Ugh. But, if Lewis and Clark could survive trekking through the wilds of Idaho and Montana, if the pioneer settlers could survive taking covered wagons through thousands of road less miles, if Frodo and Sam could pass through darkness and danger in the land of Mordor, by god, I can face a little rain. Even a lot of rain.

The final segment of Don’s route takes him to the northwest tip of Washington State, and then south along the Pacific Coast, back to San Francisco. What a loop!
