I think I achieved air-lock. On pumping water from the totes, the containers compressed, although I have an overflow pipe at the top that I thought would deliver air. Apparently not at all times.

Anyway, I removed the end cap and placed a vent in its place. On opening the tube a few days ago, the totes immediately expanded as air flowed in. On the last rain, overflow seemed fuller.
