Home ~ Cedar Works ~ Progress continues–02/15 5

I had hoped to get pictures up today, but ran out of daylight. I have been busy with various aspects of the project, with the hope that I can have potable water by the 1st of April. I want to get the potable water tote and the barrels for water purification as quickly as I can. I plan to have both NLT Monday, 02/20.

Today, the front gutters were connected to the First Flush Diverter Receiver. The 4″ PVC Pipe looks better than I expected. The Gutter Man [today--Randy, Kevin, & Josh] does excellent work. Tomorrow, we are to have rain. So, I get to see the difference harvesting rain from the front makes.

Before the water goes to the slow sand filter [SSF], I want to pre-filter it. I have thought of several ways of doing so. Last night, I found this:

I hope the number of barrels I use in the purification process stops at three [one pre-filter and two SSFs {need a backup}]. Details of tis filtration process can be read here.

Today, I worked on these projects:

1) connection the front gutters to the rainwater harvesting system

2) a special PVC “bucket” to receive pressurized water from a small holding tank and then gravity feed it to the pre-filter. Before, that was going to be the SSF and then the SSFs.

3) the container for the charcoal & UV filters and the plumbing of that container for connection to the potable water tote.

While all that was going on, I stopped to work on a computer with a virus–not one of mine.

I think this is a wrap for today.

  1. The 1st of April, because it takes about 3 weeks for the bio-layer [ Schmutzdecke] to form. I have to get the containers, plumb them, get the sand & gravel and prepare it. Along the way, my plumber will put in a pump and outside spigot. Busy times are ahead…

  2. Why do I say a special PVC “bucket”?

Because, it is not a bucket, but acts as one. That is a bucket who’s water flow is controlled by a toilet float–severely modified. A toilet float on stilts. To allow a couple gallons of water to fill the 4″ canister, I needed the float neat the top.

I achieve that my increasing the length of the float using PVC pipes and tubing therein. I’ve tested for leaks. I’ll soon test filling under pressure.

I have a real bucket [also using a float] at the chicken coop.

I choose PVC versus a plastic bucket to better fit the aesthetics of the water cabinet.
