AR.Drone ~ a video "truck" ~ Will this work? 4

I have setup various camera platforms [trucks]. This is different. I’m looking to fly a camera [the GoPro Hero Naked] underneath an AR.Drone. Can I do it? We know the AR.Drone will carry the GoPro Pro [on top]. That’s not what I want. I do not want to see parts of the quadricopter. How do I protect a camera beneath? Glad you asked? Here is my plan:

To Be
Determined

The Extended Landing Gear [ELG] is key to the implementation of my idea. Not only can it protect the camera. it may give protection to the hull of the drone. The ELG weighs 40 grams as does the Pan & Tilt Device I built. The unknown is flight characteristics with this amount of weight beneath the drone. Again, we know it will carry the GoPro on top of the drone. My setup add about 80 grams to the weight of the camera. I plan to remove the Parrot landing legs & feet and fly in the outdoor mode for further weight reduction. The other consideration in the copter’s center of gravity. I’ll balance as best I can. I have some ideas. I’m still hoping AR.Pilot from the German Forum will comment here.

Well, there you have it for now. If I just had a Parrot AR.Drone, I could begin testing. Stay tuned…

AR.Drone ~ Custom Pan & Tilt Device for my GoPro Hero 2

Custom Pan & Tilt Device for my GoPro Hero Camera

I have spent just over 24-hours fashioning a device to hold my GoPro Hero Naked Camera and allow me to use it with a Parrot AR.Drone quadricopter. First, I want it beneath the drone. This design facilitates that. My next article will have a bit more on that. The real question is how will it fly with the camera below? On the design: I made it from items in my junk box. The legs are a piece of a water cage. The top [for panning] is from a bell and the rod for tilting id a piece of fender stay. Heat shrink tubing, with a short piece of carbon fiber for a solid back, and a robber pad make up the device. Total weight, without camera, 40 grams.
