I’ve seen lots of external cameras and their footage used on the Parrot AR.Drone. I’m most impressed by these two and leaning toward the GoPro HD Hero Naked versus the ConturHD. It is cheaper, lighter and can also take stills. There is some debate about quality. OTOH, I do not like the way the way it is perched on top of the drone. But, at least I see how it is mounted. I have not with any of the others.

I have figured a way to do this–not using either of these cameras. I think with a lot more flexibility and not nearly as ugly. To confirm, I need measurements. You know anyone with a Parrot AR.Drone? –jim
A thought – would it be possible to mount a slim camera like the GoHero vertically on the belly? The videos on the Parrot site seem ok from the front camera but poor on the downview.
I wonder if the software will allow automatic stationkeeping on one of the “tag” markers if the marker moves?
I’m think slimmer still. The iPod Touch 4th-Gen. It is 3.56 oz and a few dollars cheaper than the GoPro Hero Naked. The question is where can I fit it–side-looking works for me and in SLAR.
Anyway, as best I can determine COG need to be maintained. The bottom has 2 sensors and a center-mounted camera. I’m considering the rear, with a 3.56 oz. counterweight. I do not want a Hero stuck on the top. If I could fit the touch in the copula, I think that could work. Viewers may prefer to look to the front.
I’d like to discuss my idea with you on the phone.
I think the drone does station-keep.
Thanks!

It would be interesting to set up a helipad on a trike’s rack and enable autonomous launch & land ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZtUTYDBKYQ ) allowing you to send the parrot aloft on a video mission, then land by itself.
I think that is doable. My review of the research at the NASA Langley Research Center shows just that being done. A developer will design an app for autonomous flight. The use of GPS will allow for mobility. Yes, it is a toy, but a cool toy, with lot of real-world potential.
I see it as great video tool. There are other copter solutions for over 10K USD. If the front camera where HD, it would work. It is designed for flight and gaming. I’m ok with that. Using the iPod touch give me the possibility of live-streaming to the Internet.

This video gives you some idea of the available space.

Continuing my research, I find the iPod Nano, 5th Generation has a camera [not HD], but lighter and cheaper. I’ll find son Nano vids to evaluate.
