What is a Rescue Dog? 5

Wikipedia defines a Rescue Dog this way:

A Rescue dog is a dog that has been rescued from possible euthanasia in an animal shelter, that has been saved from an abusive or severely neglectful home, or that is simply no longer wanted by its owner.[1]

Many dogs end up in rescues because they were purchased because of what the owner thought they wanted, not because of what the dog would require. Dog Rescue groups take dogs in for a number of reasons. Dogs may have had a owner die and are left with no one to care for them. They may have gotten away from the family while traveling or during a storm. They may have been abandoned intentionally. They may have been turned in for behavioral problems that owners chose to ignore, rather than address properly. They may have been a bad fit for the family or the living quarters. Some people have to relocate overseas, others go into retirement homes who won’t allow pets. There are many reasons for dogs to end up with a rescue group.[2]

I am sure many of my readers either have or know someone who has a rescue dog. I know two such dogs [and their owners, of course]. Both these dogs are a part of the cycling life of the owners. Here, I’m trying to focus more on the dog than the owner. Thanks! –jim

He’s about 16 months old, half German Shepherd, half Australian Cattle Dog, the most incredibly loving dog, eager to please, always ready to play… [read more]

Sierra Sierra

Sierra is now my service animal to warn me if my heart is about to go into fibrillation so I can take a dose of meds. It only happens every six years or so, and just happened this past September, so I don’t expect anything like that to happen for a long time now. Sierra has to go everywhere with me now, legally!

These are human interest stories, more about the animal than the owner. If you know of other such stories, please share them with us.

  1. Hi,

Now you know 3! We have a lovely yellow Lab named Orla (Irish for golden girl I’m told) that we rescued from West Virginia. She has been with us going on 10 years now. She hasn’t taken to the cycling aspects of my life but put her in a pond and she will go nuts! :)
