Fargo Trailer ~ Solar DiNotte Tail Lights Reply

Voltage output

The SolLite-4AAE Solar Panel output is rated at 6-volts @ 150 mA. Although I have not verified the current, I was seeing 8.77 volts. At the time I took this series of pictures, the voltage ranged from the high 7′s to mid-8 volts. That indicates to me the panel is very capable of charging the 4 AA Ni-MH batteries in the battery pack—one panel per 4 batteries.

Again, there are 4 battery packs connected together—two [respectively] to operate the lights and two to be charged.

I was very pleased to see voltage higher than rated. Now, I need to have metering to know when the batteries are fully charged. My research say 8-10 hours to charge 4 AA batteries at the panel charge rate. For now, I do not plan to meter the charging, I do plan to carry a small multimeter on the tour.

Later [with the trailer being towed], I will test battery run & charge times. For now, this is a wrap on this part.

Here,I have placed the 2 small (5" x 6") SolLite-4AAE Solar Panels on the Topeak DeFender™ M2 Fender that I installed for this purpose. The fender is mounted on a special rack I built for it. The wiring is neatly put away, yet I can easily rotate or remove the fender, if needed. I’m pleased with the results and it works [an article on that later].
