The second thing I asked of Ashley [of Utah Trikes] is to give me protection from the sun’s rays through an integrated canopy. I do not want it to look like it was just stuck on, but rather that it is a integral part of the quad. I’ve ridden too many days with the hot sun boring into my skin. Yes, I use sun block and even wear long paints for UV protection from time-to-time.
I’ll have lots of UV exposure during this tour and want to take active measures for protection. I also asked that the design be able to support solar panels if possible. If I also get rain protection, then that is also good. I offered him information from Veltop, the French Company, whose top Mr. Giraldo [pics below] used during his Tour of Discovery.
In addition, Captain Creeg [BROL Member] has shared his design for sun protection. His concept was presented yesterday in the BROL thread where I introduced my quad planning. I also published his ideas here. This might well be a prototype for Ashley.
Ashley does suggest I use the Mueller GX Winwrap Fairing for leg protection. For greater protection the VeCOB Velomobile is yet another consideration. Shown here [left] on a trike, Ashley says it is adaptable to the quad. It is a Carl Mueller creation.

The VeCOB kit is awesome. It would be great on a quad. I love it.
Hi Duncan, It is sweet. I’m moving in a slightly different direction for touring though–more dune buggy like for UV protection. Like you, I like it and look forward to seeing one on a quad. Thanks! –jim
