Allow me to use my Schmidt SON28S Disc 36-Hole Hub from my RANS Stratus XP—not on one of the four wheels, but turned by the rear axle. Ashley says can do!
YES!
Wheel removed, the hub will get its rotation from the axle when I engage it. So there is no drag on the drive train as there would be with the hub as a part of the wheel. Why, you ask?
I’m a firm believer in multi-tiered lighting. During my 2006 Florida tour, I had one night that I rode with only the LightSpin Dynamo. If it had failed, I would have been in the dark. I had used up the NiteRider Flight Li-Ion battery earlier in the day. The LightSpin wheel cover also wore out on that 1,062 mile tour. I now have spare dynamo wheel covers.

Well, the NightRider is no more. My principal lighting [Tier One] will be my DiNotte 1200L Headlight, supplemented with a pair DiNotte 400L Amber Daytime Headlights and a pair DiNotte 400L Taillights.
Tier Two will be the SON system using the lights I purchased for my RANS Citi Crank Forward [pictures left & right].
Tier Three will be to find a way to use my LightSpin Dynamo, hopefully to power the two lights you see here. Lighting, as I see it, is critical to safe cycling. Tier three is to be used only when the other two tiers have failed. I operate the DiNotte Lights with 2 separate batteries and would carry a spare battery for a tour of this length.
I think this does lighting.
