…or would a Utah Trike Quad work better? 4

That, is work better for touring [2 tracks versus 3; 2 driven wheels; increased weight carrying capacity]? Pricing seems similar.

  1. Jim,

Are you planning a tour or are the trike threads just for discussion? Did I miss something? I’ve never ridden a quad so I can’t add anything there. I have owned a tadpole and test-ridden a Hase. I think it would depend on the traffic where you are touring. If it were a lot of traffic I think I would like to be a little higher up like the Hase provides vs. the Trizard. I think that luggage capacity would be a greater on the Hase as well. Plus the (lack of)ground clearance on the Rans may very well be the biggest negative. My 2 cents worth.

    • Hi David, I am planning for a possible tour from Maine to Florida. I do not see my Catrike 700 as viable for such a tour; therefore, I am beginning to explore other options. Since I have a tadpole, I’d prefer something different, thus the 2 deltas and now quad added. I’m also expecting to ride in the deserts of the west in 2010 or later. I’d like to get a cycle that can serve all purposes. Reader input is welcomed in that someone may have toured on one of the three mentioned [or similar] cycles.

The possible start month is June. You have not missed anything. Sometimes things go really fast. The ride would be along Adventure Cycling Atlantic Coast Route. I’m thinking a quad will handle traffic the same as a tadpole and with 2 versus 3 tracks. I’ll take yours as a vote for the Hase. Thanks!

  2. Yes my vote is for the Hase. Of course I have never ridden a Trizard, but that low ground clearance is a problem waiting to happen I think. I’ve seen pictures of a Hase with low-rider racks on the front wheel. I imagine with that setup and the large bag Hase makes for the back of the trike, you could easily carry enough gear. In regards to the quad, I just wonder how much added “drag” the fourth wheel adds. Plus it’s one more opportunity for a flat! Good luck and I look forward to following your planning and eventual tour.

    • Thanks David, I agree with your concerns with the low clearance because I’ve experienced idler damage on my CT700 from ground collisions. Where possible, I want to buy American. My leaning is toward Utah Trikes and the quad at this point. Touring is slow [10 mph avg.] anyway. I’m told I can meet that with the quad.

We differ on the flat potential. I see two tracks in the sand as better that 3. Miss the hazard with the fronts and the rear will follow. With my tadpole, I’m trying to dodge with 3 wheels.

Yep, a 4th wheel will add drag. We can compensate to some degree by being aero and having low rolling resistance. I want to use a canopy for sun protection.

This will be an interesting project and tour, should everything fall into place. Do you know anyone who wants a FRANS Stratus XP fame at a reasonable cost?

As usual, I appreciate your thoughts.

      Jim
