Okay, we gave it an effort. Next time, I will use my telephoto lens and stop it down to preclude overexposure for the bright gases. Alma will start shooting before the launch and keep the launch vehicle in the center of the frame. I know there are not to be any more night shuttle launches, but for any space launch. At least we captured something. I’ve thrown away about two-thirds of my shots as they were duplicates. The ambiance of the crowd makes for an interesting audio track. I hope you enjoy the vid & pics. –jim

  2. Jim,

I can confirm the Shuttle is back on the ground! ;-) About 6 pm last night I was about peed my pants when the shuttle broke the sound barrier on the way to Edwards AFB. I don’t know if it was due to the light cloud cover we had or what, but the sonic boom from yesterday’s landing was one of the loudest I’ve heard. You know this is earthquake country and sometimes the earthquakes start out with a loud thud depending on if it is a roller or not. I had an instant where I thought “Uh Oh, this is the big one!”

    • Well, at least 2 CE readers [I read too] experienced the Shuttle Discovery. Were you able to see it after its announcement. I’ll bet that is quite a sound to hear. Hey, the BIG One is yet to come. Hopefully, not in your life-time. Thanks David for reporting. –jim

  3. I couldn’t see it. But luckily the TV was on and they showed it on the news. I realized after a few seconds that since it was two quick booms it must be the shuttle. I was able to watch the landing on TV. I have a co-worker that goes out to Edwards sometimes when he knows it is landing there. I’m going to go with him one of these days and check it out.

    • That will be cool. I’d love to see a landing, but too far to drive. You only have a few more shuttle launches and then you need bad Florida weather. Good luck.Of course, we will have the space ship of the future to whitness. Thanks David!

      Jim
