Unintended benefit ~ iPhone 3GS 5

You are looking at the bottom end of my iPhone 3GS. To the left and right extents of the phone[beside the screw heads] are speaker [left] and microphone [right]. Yes, the speaker is small [may not be all bad]. Yet, the sound reasonably good for its size [until you plug in larger stereo speakers and hear the resonance of that sound. Of course, larger stereo speakers sound better as you would expect. I'm still okay with the iPhone's sound.

Final Prep for my Goblin Cricket Tail FairingI purchased a pair of iHome IHM77BC Stereo Speakers and had them fitted to my trike [visible on the left-side of the trike, just in front of the Kojak label on the rear tire] for my tail fairing [that I'm still waiting for]. Each of these speakers has a switch which may be difficult to get to with the fairing in place. Plus, they have to be charged periodically. The iPhone on my extended USB battery will run longer than the speaker’s charge. Of course, I can run both off the USB battery using a USB y-splitter cable. I have them from my RANS Stratus XP kit. Given potential switch & charging issues, I think I should remove the iHome speakers from my trike.

Another factor is, neither my RANS Citi Crank Forward nor my Trek Project One DF have external speakers and I’d listen to music on those bikes from the iPhone internal speakers, why not on the trike. Hey I’ll save .37 lbs by removing them from the trike, but whose counting.

The unintended benefits are music on any cycle I use the phone with and a slight weight saving on my Catrike 700.

Aren’t I blessed!

    • Yeah, I saw your post and link earlier. They are very nice speakers. I just have to make my complete kit work together and resolve charging when on the road like RAGBRAI last year. Where do you have your mounted? –jim

  1. I have them mounted on my GTO, on the sideposts. I attached Greenspeed computer mounts to each of the side posts. Attached to that is the base of the RAM iPhone bike mount. The speakers attach to the mount with heavy duty velcro, sold by Radio Shack under the brand name of SuperLock. That stuff grips like crazy, sometimes I have a hard time removing the speakers from the trike. I am in process of creating a similar setup for my Tour Easy.

Okay, tell us what you think...
