Day 69 – Emporia to Virginia Beach
Friday July 24, 2009, 109 miles (175 km) – Total so far: 3,809 miles (6,130 km)
We arrived late at Virginia Beach. It was a long day but it was worth it.
Taking the US58 has been great. The road has generally been good with shoulders and we did save over 100 miles compared to the Transam. However today we had to go north via Driver and then into Norfolk and across to Virginia Beach via Military Road. The US58 does not permit cyclists from Suffolk
The ride to Driver was lovely. The Military Road section was very scary. There is no shoulder, it is Friday and people are going home and the drivers are generally aggressive and not patient with cyclists. This 5 mile section was nothing short of a nightmare but the entire 30 miles to Virginia was very scary
I know now why the end point of the Transam is Yorktown but we are happy that we did complete our journey in this wonderful place.
We found a hotel with a room on the ocean front. Virginia Beach is a fantastic holiday resort with a great sandy beach. Lots of beautiful people having fun in the sun. This is a wonderful finish that has vanquished any feelings of anti-climax.
Congratulations to David and Roger as the complete their ocean-to-ocean journey! They too are Road Warriors. Their journal is a good read. Again, it is at Crazyguyonabike.com.
