Mr. Giraldo’s Day37 Msg & Pics 1

July 12, 2009

Dear Reader:

Tour of Discovery - Day 37 294 Yesterday my fears materialized. The package containing my replacement tires and the very much needed alignment tool, never arrived to the Outpost Motel, in Dolores. Josh, from Atlantic Bicycles did his best to get the items to me, in a rush. Even though the package had been sent next-day delivery it never made it from Margate, Florida past Denver, Colorado. We knew this from the tracking. Perhaps the true reason for this delay is that Dolores is a small community and the U.S. Postal Service has logistical limitations.

Mr. Giraldo Ride Day37 ~ Rico, Colorado 1

Password="Student"

Some 36.6 miles from the start in Dolores, Mr. Giraldo is over half-way to Telluride and just 12.8 miles or so short of Lizard Head Pass [see arrow on map] for the downhill [more or less] into Telluride [see arrow on map]. The question for tomorrow is: Go into Telluride or keep on triking toward Montrose? Info for you to trike to your first CO summit—Lizard Head Pass.

Google Earth ~ Dolores2Telluride ~ Day37 3

MDay37Metrics r. Giraldo struck out this morning around 9:11 a.m. [according to SPOT ~ Password="Student"] on his way to Telluride, Colorado [was the Day36 Ride, now Day37]. Using BikeRoute Toaster and Google Earth, I created a tour of Mr. G’s ride and then captured it as an AVI movie using Stagit [which I use for all my screen captures]. I then uploaded the movie [SLOW] to WordPress.com [after an upgrade to VideoPress] to allow me to upload movies direct to WP. After WP’s processing, the video is now ready for my readers. Enough of the how, now here it is:

We have my Day36 Ride post, with Terry’s elevation profile; and, now we have a BikeRoute Toaster elevation profile. We should be ready for the ride. BTW, I recorded the video fast so you do not have to spend a lot of time viewing. Access online [now removed], download to your Google Earth and watch it at the speed you choose [goto the Summary Tab & click "View in Google Earth (klm)"] to view in your GE or download the KML file for subsequent Google Earth viewing.

Dolores2Telluride Elevation Profile II 2

You may have seen my earlier elevation profile created using GPS Visualizer. Well, thanks to Terry, I’ve tried another that I’m liking for its simplicity in setting up the route, etc. It is BikeRoute Toaster. Select Course Creator and you are on your way [using Google Maps]. Select the Summary Tab to see [an instantaneous] elevation profile. There’re also metrics which I like more than the numbers in the margin of my earlier elevation profile.

BikerRoute Toaster Dolores2Telluride Summary

After you have seen the profile and looked at the numbers, you can over-fly your route using Google Earth to virtually ride your route. Do this by clicking on "View in Google Earth (kml)" at the bottom of the Download Box on the Summary Tab. Of course, you are served with Google Ads on 3 of the 4 tabs. The Cue Sheet Tab give you printable directions [turns] for your ride.

I think this is a "keeper." It is web-based. Donations are welcomed.

Thanks Terry! I like it!
