Day 23 – Boulder to Torrey: We have completed 25% of trip
Monday June 8, 2009, 36 miles (58 km) – Total so far: 1,042 miles (1,676 km)
We left late this morning, wanting to make as much use of our very expensive motel.
We were expecting a tough climb and we got it. Ray and I walked up most of the climb above 8200 feet, where it got particularly steep. I felt awful from the outset, tired and listless form the previous three hard days. My right lung was hurting and this got worse as the elevation increased. Our initial objective was to make Hanksville, 81 miles away, but the mountain got us and we stopped at Torrey, arriving at about 3:30 pm.
The scenery continued to amaze us but because it was cold and overcast, the vistas were a bit muted.
We are now using the acronym, PUDs given to us by Ray. PUDs are Pointless Ups and Downs hereinafter known as PUDs. The drop into Torrey looks like its downhill but its not. Its is just one PUD after the other.
