HOUSTON [from the Huffington Post] — The nation’s turbulent space program will be run by one of its own, a calming well-liked former space shuttle commander. President Barack Obama on Saturday chose retired astronaut Gen. Charles Bolden to lead NASA. He also named former NASA associate administrator Lori Garver as the agency’s No. 2. If confirmed, Bolden, who has flown in space four times and was an assistant deputy administrator at one point, would be the agency’s first black administrator. More…

The space shuttle Atlantis landed at California’s Edwards Air Force Base today, after rainy Florida weather precluded a Kennedy Space Center landing for a third day. Atlantis launched May 11 for NASA’s final repair visit to the Hubble Space Telescope. Astronauts conducted space walks to perform routine repairs and replace key instruments, in what has been called one of the most ambitious space repair efforts ever attempted. [news report from CNN]

I couldn’t wait to see the results of any testing after riding behind it. “It is too cool”

I don’t know if roll down testing will show much. I think the machine would have to be up to speed for a while to really prove its worth. Just like a full streamliner needs some serious speed to become really effective, this tail faring will need a certain amount of speed to become effective. Don’t know if a 1/4 mile hill will allow enough speed on the roll down to tell much.

My opinion is that with the tail box and wheel discs the average speed over a 25 mile ride “might” go up 3 to 4 mph. I would settle for only 2 to 3 and be happy. But then I am not a strong rider, so anything will help.
