Fairing pics I’ve been waiting for… 9

Thanks to Jeff Bales of Goblin Motors for posting these pictures on his website. I am excited about the race version of Jeff’s tail fairing for my Catrike 700 and thought I was resolved to purchasing it. Now, seeing the storage version, I ‘m changing my mind. It’s just more practical [see discussion between David & me].

The Goblin Green fairing looks really good, although my color of choice is Basic Black. Now, the questions are weather Jeff’s front fairing will be flocked, and should I finish the fairing or have Jeff finish it. I have an email into him asking his front faring flocking plans. He had mentioned flocking the rear for even better aerodynamics.

  1. Hey!

I’m sure your intended goal for riding (speed vs. touring/commuting) would make a big difference in which version to go with but, I sure like the thoughts of that storage option. Have you determined rear light placement yet?

    Zeke

    • Hi Zeke,

Certainly, having the storage option is a plus, thus my leaning in that direction. I don’t expect it will reduce speed that much–not knowing if there’s any great difference in construction between the two, other than the cutouts.

I have not decided on a final light placement. If I go with a finished fairing from Jeff, they will stay on the front fender. I do not know how my front fenders will integrate with his front fairing [which has not been built yet]. OTOH, an unfinished fairing gives me the greatest flexibility–leaning unfinished.

  2. The work that Jeff Bales is doing at Goblin is very nice. I am very impressed and am curious how far he will take this. If there ends up being a tail fairing that I can use on my Raptobike, I will likely jump at it. It is a lot cheaper than importing one from Germany or the Netherlands.

    • Hi Duncan,

I saw your BROL post on Jeff’s new fairing thread. I’m really please with his work. I’d love to see the results from Jeff’s roll-down test. I also await his front faring to determine how I’ll integrate my accessories with it and well as its speed benefits and the possibility of side panels that essentially may make the CT700 a Velomobile.

Then, there is my VK2 and how much any of this can be used with it. The speed potential is awesome. I see you will be racing soon. So, a faster Raptorbike will thrill.

  3. I asked Jeff the following:

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the updates and pictures. Your storage version is impressive. I was considering the race version; but, with these pictures, I’m thinking storage version. I have a few questions please:

Is the weight of the race & storage version about the same?
Will you also flock the front fairing?
Did you get to do the roll-down test last Sunday?

I’m planning to place my order o/a 05/20.

    Jim Artis

  4. Jeff responded:

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks for the compliments.

The storage version is a little bit heavier due to the inner walls. It weighs about 9 pounds vs. the race version being about 7.25 pounds.

The front fairing shouldn’t be flocked, just the trailing part of an aerodynamic system.

I haven’t done the roll-down yet. It’s been a bit breezy. I’m looking at this coming Sunday as a possibility.

  5. I’m just full of questions:

    Thanks Jeff,

I’ll be waiting for any new post from you. Not that I’m anxious, but when will you have a front faring mock-up [attached to your CT700]? I continue to reconfigure my trike for your fairings. Oh yes, is a Catrike Velomobile a possibility using your fairings? THANKS! –jim

    • …and Jeff is patient enough to answer:

The eventual goal (if you have all of the fairings) is for the 700 to be like a velomobile with the sides open. I want to increase the 700′s speed and help keep sun and wind off of the rider to minimize cancer issues and extend the riding season…
