Magura H33 Hydraulic BrakesBrakes: Magura HS33 Hydraulic Rim Brakes [Magura Site]

Why not? Again, I’m building up a unique RANS Crank Forward. Now, the question is: Will the rear brake work on this bike? …and Nanda, the answer is…

Rims: I learned of these rims as I’ve researched the build-up of the Surly Big Dummy. Surly’s staff says a 2.25-2.3 tire is the smallest tire they like on this rim.  The maximum tire width for the Magura H33 brake is 2.5 inches.  Now, the question is: Will the Citi frame take a 2.3" tire?

VikB [BROL member] has these rims [with the Shimano Alfine Hub in black ~ way to GO!] on his Surly Pugsley. Vik has a Big Dummy [on my wish list] and writes about both in his "The Lazy Randonneur" blog as well as having lots of pictures in his flickr photostream. Pay him frequent visits. He always has lots of information there and has consolidated several blogs into one.

Tires: Schwabe Big Apple LiteSkin

Feather light Balloonbike comfort. Depending upon size the LiteSkin version is ca. 150 to 200 g lighter than a conventional Big Apple tire. The weight reduction has been made possible using folding tire technology and the specially light LiteSkin side wall. There is no reduction in puncture protection!

Bottom Bracket, Crank, and Chain Ring: I have no particular preference other than color–black. So, Nanda, what do you recommend to go with what I have described? Components from the Alfine Group look interesting.

Chain: SRAM Hollowpin chain.

Again, I look to Nanda [BTW, Nanda is also a BROL member ~ Stradavarius] for the sanity check: Will these tires fit and how will large wheels/tires look on the Citi? Schwabe Specs: Article No ~ 11633439; Size ~ 26 x 2.35; PSI ~ 20-55

The other components are discussed in my 12/26 Just for knocking around–cruzin’ post.

  1. Hi Russell,

Thanks and especially for the links to your pictures. You’ve helped confirm the tires I plan to ride with on my Citi. I wish the tires were without white markings. How do you like the ride? Where do you ride? Thanks! –jim

  2. I ride a lot of paved rail trails in Western WA. In the warmer months, I like to ride the unpaved Iron Horse rail trail, mostly a dirt road with embedded rocks and some loose gravel. The Citi and Big Apples do both paved and unpaved nicely. I average 14 mph on paved and often hit 18-20 mph downhill on the unpaved. I’m a heavy rider and have not had any flats with these tires which makes me very happy. On my old hybrid with $15 tires, I would get at least 1 flat and often break a spoke on the 50 mile round trip on the Iron Horse (always happened going down hill). Hope to see pics of your new ride in the future.

  3. Thank you Russell. How kind of you to share. This is good information for me to know, as well as other reader who may be considering the same. I have never ridden, or even seen Big Apples. I’ve read a lot about them over the last 3 years. THANKS! …and Yes, I will be posting lots of pictures. Those of the build, as well as the bike in use. I remember your picture links above. Thanks for that also. At 7:00 p.m. today, I’ll post my shopping list. If I have missed anything, will you please let me know. Take care and Happy New Year. –jim

  5. Jim,

The Large Marge rims are 60mm wide and won’t really work with tires less than 75mm wide [3"]. You could certainly use Velocity Aeroheat rims and those tires.

I’m looking forward to seeing how your build works out.

    safe riding,

    Vik

  6. I see Surly says you can use tires as narrow as 58mm on those rims – that surprises me. I’d mount up the tires on the rims without building them into wheels just to see what you think before you are committed.

    safe riding,

    Vik

  7. Thanks Vik,

At the point of purchase, I would have sunk that cash in the Large Marge Rims. Granted, I can save them for the Big Dummy. I’d rather get proper size rims for the Citi to begin.

I’ve done lots of searching. Russel above has shared his pictures with 2.35 Big Apples on his Citi. Just not on Large Marge Rims. I’m sensing you may be thinking they may be a bit wide for the Citi–are you???

  8. My only concern is that a tire that is only 60mm wide won’t sit well on a rim that is 60mm wide. However, I would defer to the guys at Surly if they have tried it and found it to work okay than that’s great.

    safe riding,

    Vik

  9. I’m with you. Actually, the Big Apple is slightly wider than Surly’s minimum [2.37" versus 2.3"]. The Velocity Aeroheat is another rim that I’m considering. Thanks! –jim
