Yesterday, Mark and I both had 2 flats each. My 2 occured in Daytona Beach within 1-2 miles of each other. Mark had one near St. Augustine and one in Daytona Beach just after my first flat. I brought 4 tubes, 2 left. I’ll patch the first 2, if needed. I need more CO2 cartridges, although I have a hand-pump.
Today we will ride along US1 for the most part so that we can get as far south as possible to reduce [we hope] the impact on Tropical Storm Alberto. We expect to ride in rain again.
Well there has been lots of rain. I managed to remain relatively dry. First rain today–U.S. Army Recruiting Station–The Rockledge Station. Special thanks to SSG Reed and SSG Rich for allowing me into their house and for their Internet assistance.
Then I had a rear flat after riding about 10-12 miles [16.1-19.3 kms]. I noted the rear tire needed to be replaced.
Found a LBS–J&S Cyclery–replaced both tires and kept the front as a spare. Althought they were quite busy, they took care of my tire problem. Thanks to Mr. Joe Lutz, one of the owners. Of course the tire resolution occurred as it rained. I waited out the intense rain. I posted pictures and to this blog while at the LBS and waiting to see if the rain would slack off. I have 30 miles to go for a century today. I rode 110 miles.
GPS Data: [720 miles (1,158.7 kms) in 6 days]
James, it’s good to hear you’re doing well despite all the mechanical nuisances. It’s ironic that your first rain was at a US Army Recruiting center. The Army gave you the discipline to deal with situations like this. I know you will finish and finish strong. Keep those pedals turning. This will be a big milestone for you.
I do not know about strong. I expect to complete to ride. I’m moving a big bike. It sometimes takes a while. Yesterday, Monday, was another long day.
You’re doing fine Jim. How many can say they’ve ridden 100+ miles in one day? Or have ridden to Key West? Or have even been to key west? Here is a link to some car rental agencies. There are deals that would be more economical than taking the train back to NC (if you and Mark pool your money)…including the cost of gas in most cases. It’s from Kayak.com.

Thanks! Mr. Mark has made arrangements for rates he likes. I have already purchased my train ticket. See my earlier post on tour logistics. There is a bigger story within this story…
Plan B, just incase.
Always a good boy scout…
